LOVE WAS HERE
A tattered Monarch
September 26th 1999

Butterfly, injured, on the path
Flitting to and fro
Fanning the air in Fleeting time
Wings, resonating sound
By time,by fear, unbound.

On my hand, so softly still
In wonder, on a plate on my windowsill
Up and Over, the cut grass unfit
Into the crab trap, and out.

My sweet Butterfly, flight is unsure
Your wing is broken, but yet you soar
The dot on your wing, five nine eight
began your journey perhaps from Kansas' gate.

Yet here you are, so many miles fro
The bird cage you are placed in
Bids you close your wings as slate
and through the slats you go!

It is time to put you back in the garden
where grief and sorrow know no fear
For there, you peck, still on the flower
Forever young, Forever there.

Grief in its hour
Beauty in place
Love was here.
