  • Perennial herb from a slender to stout rhizome
  • 5-10 dm tall
  • Leaves opposite, 8-23 cm long, 4-10 cm wide
  • Flowers: deep purplish-red
  • Habitat: Sandy or rocky calcareous soils of open deciduous woodlands
  • Distribution: Great Plains except IA, MO, e edge KS (also Wallace Co.), e edge OK; (CT & NC w to Great Plains, s to AR)
